Road Trip – Lakeland and Port Charlotte

The Beach Birds are back on the road following up our home stretch. The two opponents for this trip were the Lakeland Flying Tigers and the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs.

I made the trip to Port Charlotte last year but this was my first trip to Lakeland since I was backing up GCL games with the Braves in 2014. I threw on Saturday before the trip on Monday which meant that I was ready to roll at any point during the trip. The Flying Tigers have our number apparently because we dropped the first two games of the series and I was told they took the series from us last time. The extent of my action was being told if we take the lead on Tuesday I am in the game.

The real action and first action I had of the trip came on Wednesday in a 8-1 ballgame in favor of the Cardinals. This was a good opportunity for me to build off my success at home and I was we rested with three days off. I also knew that I had one inning to cover instead of holding anything back for multiple outings. The first out in any inning is the most important to me because it sets the tone. In an 8-1 ballgame i wanted to come out and show them that if they were going to come back into the game they had an uphill challenge. I ended up getting the first hitter before the second guy had a nubbed single up the middle. It was a ball that looked like it bounced 20 times and both middle infielders went chasing after it. In my mind I thought okay someone will cover second base no problem and this guy won’t run since they are down seven. Well I was a tad late covering and he was safe at second. In the scheme of the game it didn’t matter and I got the next two hitters out. The game was over. The advice I got after the game was to continue to throw my slider because we were up by seven. It is the perfect time to work on throwing it and getting the feel bad. It isn’t 100% yet but considering where I am it I am happy with it. My fastball strike percentage was 100% which I don’t think I’ve done that before. The Lakeland outing was a good building block.

Thanks for the warning

From there it was on to Port Charlotte. It was my second time being here but I was injured and did not pitch against the Crabs. This was the site of the famous bird guts in the bullpen incident last year. There were no fish harmed during this trip.

The Stone Crabs are in our hotly contested division race for the first half championship. The division we are in appears to be the stronger division currently as four of the five teams are above .500 while three teams on the other side of the division are below .500.

The first game was a wild game that we ended up winning in extra innings. There was a play that our coach said if we would have lost they could have potentially protested the game. The batter appeared to strike out on a foul tip and the team ran off the field. The umpires consulted and decided that it touched the ground so our defense had to come back out and finish the at bat. The hitter struck out eventually but what a crazy play to happen in the bottom of the ninth inning that sent the game to extras. Alex Reyes started the game for us in a rehab appearance and he provided food after the game. It was good eating.

The second game was a great game for pace of play. Our starter had 40 pitches through 5 innings. The Crabs broke through with a two run homer to make it 2-0 in the sixth and would go on to win 2-0 in a game that flew by. A great game for the pace.

My action came in the third game in a 2-1 ball game that we were winning. The call down to the bullpen before the inning started was hey get moving around and lightly tossing. About 15 seconds later the second call came down that said he has the third hitter of this inning. Well that escalated quickly. Then another minute or so went by were the call comes in asking if you are ready. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say they aren’t ready because you don’t want to be that guy so you roll with it. I felt fine and when your heart is pumping before the outing I let the adrenaline take care of it.

I came in with a man on second and one out up 2-1 in the 8th inning. I got a two pitch pop out to right field that kept the runner in place then I got a groundout to third to end the threat. When I walked into the dugout the manager asked if I was tired. I said no I don’t think so why? Do I look tired? He said a little, do you want the next inning? I said yes. He was fired up but I wasn’t sure what he was getting at or maybe he was trying to hype me up. In the end I went to sit at the end of the bench and think about the ninth. Port Charlotte as well as Lakeland, and most places, play a pump up video to get the crowd going and hype the crowd up before the inning. I remember warming up in Lakeland and the Hulk was Hulk smashing something on the video board. I used that to hype me up and act like the video is playing for me.

Crabs

Our catcher made the last out of the top of the ninth which meant I was throwing to our backup infielder in a helmet only. I thought well this isn’t ideal but hey he knows the risks of me firing it in there and we have a game to win. Just like in Lakeland I wanted to get the first out and take the momentum out of their dugout. It was a five pitch at bat that ended up in a pop up to center. I went on the get another five pitch strikeout and then a three pitch strikeout to end the game. My first save in five years.

It feels good to have the trust of the coaching staff to throw me into a tight game. They have confidence in me to finish out games and believe that I can help us win. I’ve never been the guy that teams turn to in that situation but I am enjoying the moment. It means I will throw more frequently but shorter appearances which I don’t mind. My arm is in the best shape it’s been coming off the rehab process so let’s ride it out and see what happens.

The league has an off day for Memorial Day and then we have a short home series with Daytona Beach. After the three game series with Daytona Beach we head back on the road to my old stomping ground. The Florida Fire Frogs of the Atlanta Braves up in Kissimmee. I didn’t get an opportunity to pitch against them last year and I’m excited to go back to where it all began.

The Return – 365 Days

Today marks the official one year anniversary of my surgery. One year ago I had a broken down elbow with an uncertain future and now I have a strong elbow with an uncertain future.

After the Daytona outing I was ready to get back into games to continue shaking off rust. Due to a combination of rain and that there was no real good situation for me to pitch I ended up not pitching at all against the Bradenton Marauders. The added downside of not pitching against them is they are the only club in the league that has MILB TV. Then I go back and scour the clips for a few good pitches and bam the blog looks fancy.

Anyways, the trip to Bradenton was fine. The hotel we stayed at was close to IMG, one of my old stomping grounds, and had plenty of food around it. The hotel had a mix up for rooming situations which lead to a funny exchange at 2:00 am when we rolled in ready to sleep. It went like this:

Trainer: Hi we are the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Hotel: Ok.

Trainer: We talked on the phone about coming into town at this time.

Hotel: Well I’ve got nothing, let me start working.

It was funny and made funnier by the fact it was early in the morning and everyone wanted to sleep.

The first weeklong home stand started on Monday and we are playing Tampa to start. Tampa is the Yankees minor league system, and recently had a name change to the Tarpons from Yankees. My name is near the top of the list to get into a game early since I haven’t thrown since Tuesday. I wasn’t the only one as we had a few guys with one or so innings on the road trip due to rain. My action Monday was warming up just in case and then sitting down once the game was under control.

Gameface

My action came on Tuesday. 364 days post surgery so not quite the one year anniversary celebration. Throwing baseballs at full speed this soon after surgery is a celebration enough for me. I came into the game in the 8th inning with a 5-1 lead. I mentioned last blog how I needed to get on the same page with my catcher and how I am a three pitch guy instead of two. I also talked about how I want to talk with the coach about my role and how I can best help the squad.

I handled the first part, my catcher is aware of my pitches. I didn’t do the second part yet and now it has come back to bite me already. I went out for my first inning and made it through in eight pitches. I was firing on all cylinders and feeling good coming off the mound. I thought got it was nice to get back out there and show them they Daytona wasn’t the real me, and how this was who I am. Then the real me came out in the second inning.

I’ve been struggling, even in extended, and going back to years past with my second innings. I don’t know how to recreate the initial feeling of coming into a game. Once I sit down it is over for me. Yes I know these thoughts are reinforcing my own self doubt about how my second inning is always worse but the numbers will back me up. My second inning started with a four pitch walk and then a five pitch walk. Next thing I know I’m out of the game and following an immediate double both my runs score. It is better they scored early so I knew my runs scored rather than an out or two first to drum up some hope I could get out unscathed. You go out and walk two guys to start an inning you know those runs are getting let in even if Cy Young was pitching.

I went from riding real high thinking about piecing together a few good outings to thinking about how this is a season tarnishing outing. Going from absolute domination with two walks in extended to already walking three here in Palm Beach. There is a mental hump in the second innings that I haven’t been able to get over yet. Knowing the coaching style here I will be in the game tonight. Let’s push this new elbow as much as we can.

Coming in hot

This therapy couch session has been nice. I’m venting and it helps to get it out there and off my chest. There are 103 games left and with that I will show enough to earn my keep. The All-Star break is in a month and by then I will have a good amount of innings to look at and build upon.

I thought it post was updated five days ago but I guess not.

Following my outing on Tuesday I was bummed on Wednesday. I came into the locker room and was told to come into the managers office and close the door. That can mean a few things. This was a positive visit. The jist of the conversation was hey we understand your frustrations and your situation. The injury, the league, life, everything. The coaching staff understands it and they want to do whatever they can to help me out going forward. They know that I want to do well and help the team, but they also know that whether or not I like it guys on this team see me as a veteran presence. For that reason in the face of adversity I need to keep my game face on. They also told me they are going to run me right back out there because we have a seven man bullpen which means we pitch frequently.

Who is watching who?

They weren’t kidding. My next action came on Thursday during the day game against Tampa. The game was schedule for 10:30 am. When I arrived to the field I was told I had a player appearance for kids day. The kids in the crowd were there for a school field trip. The select kids that were top of the class were allowed to come on the field and ask me questions. The questions were fine, and basically just asking random stuff about school. What is my favorite color, who is my favorite team, the basics. The coolest part was that I got to use the stadium microphone. It was weird hearing the voice on the loud speakers but also I felt fancy at the time. This lead right up into the start of the game in which I pitched.

Hello

This time it went the opposite of how it went on Tuesday. I came in hot for my innings and went back out for a second inning and came in hot again. It felt good when I came out knowing I helped the team and we ended up sweeping the Tarpons for a four game sweep.

The Tarpons left and the Marauders came in hot. The Bradenton squad is in our division and right behind us for the three team race for first place. We won on Friday in a solid game and then Saturday I was right back out there again. I went from throwing once in a week to now throwing three times in a week. Saturday was a weird game. What happened was our starter for Saturday moved up to AA and our team was left without a starter. Our long relief guy was scheduled to start and that means the bullpen is on edge from the beginning. It will be a bullpen day.

The starter did his best but unfortunately he hit the pitch count limit and we used a bullpen guy in the first inning. He also did well and got us to the fourth inning where I came in. I was warned about the sun setting the other day by a starter but I shrugged that off. It wasn’t until I was in the game where I went to pitch and bam sun right in the face. I told myself okay okay I know where the catcher is. Throw the ball forward. If they hit it, the stadium will knock it down and we will get out of this inning and then the sun will go down by the next inning.

Lurking

My second inning went well. I came out and went well. I was relaxed and throwing it in there expecting to throw a few innings and save bullpen arms. I’ve been in this position in the past with teams where every out is a plus and the goal is to shorten the game for the bullpen. The other factor in this game was the 3-2 score. We had already used three pitchers but were still in the game with a chance to win. The relaxed Mitchell strategy must have worked because I struck out all three guys. I was expecting to go back out but that was all for me in this game.

My pitch count must be a certain amount to start which is okay with me. I don’t consider it a burden on the team, and from what I’ve been told I am still in “rehab” mode. This first month is a test period for me to see how my body responds to the stress of being in games. The frequency of pitching, the stress of getting hot then sitting down, then throwing, then getting hot, all of that is being fleshed out this first month. I know there will be ups and downs through the last few months. The velocity will be up and down, my arm will hurt more on certain days, all of the normal season stuff will be happening. I haven’t had a full year since 2017 and I’m ready to experience another year of 2019 baseball.

We are currently on the bus for our next road trip to Lakeland and Port Charlotte. A three game set with Lakeland then a four game set with the Stone Crabs. I made the Port Charlotte trip last year but this will be my first go at Lakeland. I’ve heard the stadium is nice and I’ll be sure to get pictures. If this past week is any indication I’ll pitch three times or so depending on the starters, and I’ll throw 1-2 innings each time. Another part of the journey!

The Return – 358 Days

On Sunday night I was called and alerted that I would be joining the Palm Beach team for their upcoming road trip on Monday.

I had heard swirling rumors that my return was coming soon but until the official word comes you never know. I was excited to return to where it all started and show the Cardinals that the old man in the league still has something to offer.

The first order of business was hopping the bus and riding up to Daytona Beach. The team here is the Daytona Tortugas – A+ affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. They play their home games at Jackie Robinson field, built way back in 1914. The field tore up the grass last year and is now an all turf ballpark. It is named after Jackie Robinson because Daytona was the first city to let Jackie Robinson play a spring training game in 1946.

Sup Jackie

In my previous experience when a guy gets moved to a new level or returned from the injured list it is nice to get that first outing out of the way. I was told that the first clean inning of the game Monday would be my inning. Our starter Monday was making his Florida State League debut after the call up from Peoria. Baseball is funny that way how you can come up from a level giving up one earned run in 35 innings and then having a tougher time against slightly better hitters. I understand it, it is a big jump and he did a good job of limiting the damage to give the team a chance to win. He went four innings and the bullpen was given five innings to cover. I was not one of them as we went with the regulars to finish off a win. I warmed up at the end in case but that is all. I took in the sights and sounds of the ballpark again. The anthem to start things off, the seventh inning stretch, people asking for autographs, all of it. It was a real game.

Hotel View

The next night was a lower scoring game. Monday’s final was 13-10 and Tuesday’s was 4-3. Unfortunately for me that 4 was my doing, and I gave up two runs with one being earned. I came into the game bottom of the seventh in a 2-2 game. When I left it was 4-2. The game ended with a bad check swing call with guys on 2nd and 3rd. Tough break for the Beach Birds but at that point I was spectating hoping for the comeback where I could get off the loss column. I took the loss on my first day back but that wasn’t near the front of my mind. I was thinking about conquering Tommy John. 358 days have passed since my surgery and this was my return. This was the first time I’ve been back on a real field for almost a year. I thought about the balance beam metaphor from earlier. It is the same game as extended, the beam is slightly higher with the crowd, the night games, the skill level. I thought overall for the circumstances I did well and I am proud of the effort I put in over the last 358 days to get to where I am at now. I can rest peacefully knowing I did everything I could to get back. The rest of this season is a bonus.

Bullpen Views

I wasn’t as sharp as I had been in extended. I could feel the nerves creeping in and my legs were shaky at first. My pitching coach mentioned my back leg moving early and starting my delivery before my front leg which is less than ideal. The goal is to get the power in the back leg. My command was decent, throwing 62% strikes and the fastball command was there for the most part. This was the first time I’d thrown to this catcher, who hits bombs, and now he knows what to expect with me. I like certain slider variations early and then a different slider for later in the count, but he was all about the put away slider which I think let them take it better. Instead of the smaller one that gets miss hit to set up the big slider. As we work together more we will get it down. The sharpness of the slider wasn’t as it was last year but as I keep throwing it will return to form. That is why they like me, a good slider, and a decent heater to back it up and pitch off of. When the timidness leaves it will be even better.

For a lot of guys here, coaches included, this was their first time seeing me touch a baseball let alone pitch. In spring training I was off on my own with rehab for a while, then my live batting was hitters only, and then none of these guys were in extended. They were all positive after the game saying it was nice to see me throw and under the circumstance I appreciate their words. They don’t have to go out and say that.

My velocity was okay, but again I could feel some muscle tightness early trying to be too fine. Once my breathing caught up with the rest of my body I was good to go. Now I know from the start what to expect. The comfort level will only go up from here with more experience.

358 Days

It feels good knowing I can contribute to the team again. I don’t think I am burdensome in anyway because of my arm. My coach mentioned how they didn’t send him any restriction on what my pitch counts or my innings are. He went through TJ rehab also and I’m going to pick his brain about when he came back from it. To me I am once again a regular guy in the pen. On the flip side, I am going to communicate with the coaches about how I think I am best used and utilized. Frequency has always helped me pitch better and coming in for guys has always been a strength of mine. We agreed upon a schedule of 1 day pitch, 2 days off, 1 day pitch, 2 days off. If I can a adjust that some to maybe shorter appearances but more frequent I could help the team. I will become the fireman that gets out of jams.

Hey that’s me!

A theme of mine the last two days while being on the trip was thinking about a year ago prepping for surgery and not knowing what the future holds. The Cardinals took a chance on me in 2018 and now they will see what the rewards are in 2019. I’m proud that I have stats in 2018 and 2019, whatever they end up being. They’ve given me a new elbow for the rest of my career and rest of my days. It has been 358 days but it felt much faster. I am now part of a club that has comeback from Tommy John and there is some statistic in there now about my 358 day recovery and where that stacks up compared to everyone else. Dr. Paletta can check me off his list of patients and add another feather to his cap. I’d be surprised if I pitched tonight and after the game we head out to Bradenton to play the Pirates. They are one of the only teams in the league that has MILB TV. If I can get an inning or two there and get evidence of the return that’d be fun.

Thank you everyone for the support over the last 358 days and I’m looking forward to updating about the rest of the season.
